FREQUENCY OF INCIDENTAL DUROTOMY DURING SURGERY FOR DEGENERATIVE LUMBAR SPINE DISEASE: AN EXPERIENCE IN NEUROSURGERY DEPARTMENT OF A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

Abstract

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to know about the frequency of incidental durotomy during surgery for degenerative lumbar spine disease. METHODS: It was a Descriptive cross sectional  study conducted on the admitted patients of degenerative Lumbar spinal disease in the Department of Neurosurgery, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, in six months duration. Total of 186 patients were enrolled in the study. Surgery  was performed in the form of laminectomy and fenestration under general anesthesia by single expert neurosurgeon having a minimum of 5 years of experience. All the patients were properly looked for incidental durotomy during surgery and was properly documented. RESULTS: In this study 186 patients were observed in 6 months duration. Age range was 20 – 60 years with mean age y of 39.91 years +- 10.584 of standard deviation . Out of 186 patients about 106 patients were male and 80 patients were female with male to female ratio of 1.33: 1. Incidental durotomy was found in 8 cases (4.30%). CONCLUSION: From this study we concluded that incidental durotomy is a common complication in degenerative lumbar spine surgery. It is more common in stenosis as compare to PIVD. It is also more common in male and in patients with age <40 years.
